Efficiency of Bovine Colostrum Protein Digestion in Lambs

Aim:
To investigate the efficiency of colostral protein digestion in newborn lambs fed bovine colostrum (BC)

Protocol:
9 newborn lambs fed one meal of BC 3 hours after birth compared with the results of 2 unfed lambs and 4 lambs fed bovine milk

Results:

  • The amounts of ingested proteins in lambs fed BC were much higher than those fed milk diet
  • 35% of dietary amino acids ingested as BC were available with 4 hours for amino acid metabolism
  • High percentage of IgG was recovered in the digestive tract and in the blood
